Back in the Devon cup for the first time for fourteen years, the first half was a close do with Sidmouth winning two penalties and choosing to tap and go both of which we defended well, they eventually gave up and on the third occasion took the three points. Both sides had their chances but good defence held the score down to a three-point lead for Sidmouth.
In the second half we were playing catch-up from early on after allowing Sidmouth to forge ahead to 5 ~ 17, Ben McGowan scoring our first points after we created an overlap. Just before that we nearly scored after taking ball against the head close in we crossed their line but were unable to ground the ball to the satisfaction of the referee.
With Jack Martin taking a ten minute break we scored two tries, the first by Matt Morrison and the second by Danny Shahin and with a Matt Anstis conversion we leveled the score at 17~17 with five minutes of the match to go.
At the final whistle that was how the score stood.
Extra time proved to be just as tight with Sidmouth adding seven points in the first five minutes, we pulled the score back to 24~24 when the forwards went over from a five meter scrum with Joe Daley the try scorer and a Matt Anstis conversion.
With three minutes to go the extra time looked to be ending with a level score and with us going through on tries scored.
But a long penalty kick by Sidmouth took them to a 24~27 lead.
We came back and won a scum on their line, with Matt Anstis lined up for a drop goal we unfortunately lost the ball and with it the game.
Not for the first time we allowed the opposition to pull into an early lead forcing us to chase the game. The good point to take from it is that we are good enough to pull back the oppositions lead.
