The last pre-season for the first team, Wadebridge Camels from the league below.
A hot afternoon with quite a breeze at times blowing down the pitch from the entrance end and at times still air.
This is only a general report, I am not yet up to recognising the new players and in any case I don’t think the rugby management were taking names anyway.
A typical fictional conversation with the head coach at the bottom of the league grassroots club having won by 12~0 might go like this.
“Who scored the second try Charlie?”
“The second try, the second try……. phew! I’m not sure” he said taking off his cap.
“Well was it from a forward or a back?”
“Crumbs, you have got me there”
All match report writers have had this conversation.
Anyway, that aside we got off to a fast start with a try in less than five minutes by the ever-on-hand Joe Daley, not sure who took the conversion but it went over and we were 7~0 up.
Wadebridge, within a few minutes, opened their scoring with a try by Ollie Aggis and converted by Harvey Orchard. 7~7.
We then lifted the score to 24~7 with tries from Toby Lean, Harrison Coonick and AN Other.
Wadebridge came back with another try to make it 24~2.
We then had a very impressive period with lots of fast play and good support racking up four tries the second from Dylan Daley, under the crossbar, another from Harrison Coonick and two from Freddie Davies, the names are right if they had the numbers on their backs as advertised. Three conversions went over and one hit the post and fell dead. This took us to 50~12 at half time.
“It’s the wind” joked their linesman to me by way of an excuse for the score.
The lineouts went well for both teams on the whole with one or two ‘Not straights’ and a couple we stole.
We were well on top in the scrums.
The second half did not start well for us with Wadebridge quickly scoring two tries and converting one of them lifting their score to 50~24. They looked like getting back into the game, but fortunately we were able to get hold of the Wadebridge player’s collective shirttails and reel them in. Once that was done our scoring continued.
The second of the five tries was a super run by Liam Jarvis down the sidelines, he took the ball just in their half, broke through two players, and ran on with only the full back to beat, looking at the photos and with the sideline as the second defender it looks like he might have trouble with a determined tackle from the full back. The final photo looks like he got to the line without interference from the defender.
The third of the five tries came at the hands of Tom Davies who took the ball on halfway on the left wing and sped down the line, the Wadebridge No 13, Sam Hodge got hold go him some ten yards out but somehow he still managed to get to the try line just as a second defender arrived and scored the try before he was pushed in to touch.
We scored two more tries before the referee blew for full time. 82~24.
A good game to watch, a little one sided but Wadebridge showed that they could score tries and despite the hot day, never gave up trying.
What with this and the Albion game it is looking good for the team.
