Last season Wadebridge came up to The Rectory and we lost 5~27 while away we lost by 34~10 so they ended up a place higher than us in the league by the end of the season.
According to their coach Mike Rawlings in the Sunday Independent clearly written before the match “We have got a few new players in, and we are most probably stronger on paper than we were last season”
All good reason to be worried about the possible result.
Having watched most of the 2nds game against Launceston II I came up to watch the second half of the 1sts game half afraid to ask what the score was.
I did the players a severe injustice when I saw the scoreboard that stood at 19~17 just after the break.
Five minutes in to the game Kelli B opened the score line with a try that Matt Anstis converted to give us a welcome 5~0 lead.
Will Steinhausen opened up the defence to put away Acky Percival for try number two and a 12~0 lead.
Wadebridge stung into life came back and levelled the score with two tries and a conversion at 12~12. One of the tries was a penalty try after our front row went up.
The half ended with us taking the lead at 19~12 when Stuwie Bartlett touched down and Matt Anstis added another conversion.
Early in the second half Matt put over a penalty from just outside the twenty-two and a little wide. 22~12
Wadebridge closed the gap with a drop goal, 22~15, then scored a converted try to level matters at 22~22.
Kelli B scored what proved to be the winning points with a try beating one defender who tried to roll him on his back but he was strong enough to touch down, Matt Anstis converted to give us a five point cushion at 29~22.
Wadebridge attacked a number of times in the last five minutes, good defence by us and their errors giving us pressure relieving free kicks kept them out.
One final attack by them got close to our line but they gave away another free kick, in the mêlée referee Nigel Boyd fell over a player on our line then got up to cheers from the crowd and blew for full time. More cheers from the players and home supporters.
A bonus point in the bag for us and one for Wadebridge for their afternoons work.
