St Austell came down from the league above so it was unlikely to be an easy game.
That proved to be the case. Not that St Austell were any better than us man for man just that what they did on the afternoon they did well.
We, on the other hand started really well in the first ten minutes getting over their line but adjudged to have been held up, "There is a hand under the ball" said the referee peering in to the mass of bodies on the line.
From there we slid slowly down hill. St Austell slowly added points here and there starting with a try and conversion on seventeen minutes and rather against the run of play.
A turnover of a St Austell ball in our twenty two led to a great break down the wing. The ball was kept alive through several pairs of hands and it was Lewis Chick on the wing, in his debut 1st team game, who finished off the move in south west corner. Matt Anstis kicked a magnificent touchline conversion to level the scores at 7-7.
After the try was scored one of the visitors players suggested to the referee that there was a knock on to which he took exception and awarded a penalty to us from the restart.
Matt Anstis attempted the kick from halfway that was a creditable effort for accuracy but which just fell short.
On thirty six minutes we were penalised at a ruck on our twenty two and St Austell added three points to make it 7~10 and there it stood at half time.
Shortly after the start of the second half the visitors number fourteen scored an unconverted try after wriggling away from two defenders to score. 7~15.
In other games a scoreline like this was enough to spur us to greater things and go on to win. This afternoon it did not work out.
Despite putting in many attacks unforced errors prevented us adding any points, eventually a long kick out of defence put St Austell on the attack when they stole our line out ball.
Along the line went the ball for it to be drop kicked from the middle of the pitch just inside our twenty two. 7~18.
St Austell added a second penalty after we strayed offside, 7~21.
As the game trickled to a close they collected a yellow card but despite that we were still unable to cross their line as their defence was water tight. A number of time we looked good for a try but unforced errors and over complication stymied us.
In the dying moments Lewis Chick looked to be guaranteed a second try only for the ball to be turned over in the tackle just before it got to him.
St Austell deserved their win for playing a steady and solid game, nothing fancy just simple uncomplicated rugby.
On another afternoon the game could have gone the other way, it was just one of those games every team has from time to time.
Forget it, bottle the feeling of loss and move on.
