Sidmouth kicked off and we took the game back into their half and won a penalty and went for the five meter lineout. With the line out working well the forwards drove for the line but after getting on or over the white line the referee Dave Philpot decided we had been held up. From the following scrum we attacked but lost the ball and they kicked out.
On nine minutes Sidmouth won a scrum six meters out from their line and won it but the scrum half lost the ball and it was stolen by Alex Lambert who made ground then passed to Dan Edgecombe who had no opposition in going over for a try giving Matt Anstis an easy conversion. 0~7.
On thirteen minutes Sidmouth missed a penalty attempt.
The game went this way and that with Services scrum stronger than Sidmouth.
On the half hour the Sidmouth scrum half again lost the ball at the back of a scrum mid field, Alex Lambert fly hacked on but the Sidmouth backs managed to secure the ball and they ran back at us, chipped the backs and ran through, Matt Morrison was unable to gather the ball and they caught it and ran on to score under the posts, the conversion levelled the scores at 7~7.
A penalty for Sidmouth took them to 10~7, just before the half time whistle Matt Anstis had a penalty kick from close to half way but it drifted wide so that left the half time score at a close 10~7 to the home team.
The second half saw Sidmouth pull further into the lead on three minutes with try in the top corner, well inside our twenty two and for the first time in the game they pushed our scum and won a turn over, from that the ball went along the line to the winger who evaded the defence to score and with the conversion the score moved to 17~7.
On fifteen the backs made a good break, new prop Curtis Reynolds was amongst them and made good yards, Sidmouth infringed in front of the posts and we took a quick tap penalty and sent it towards the clubhouse side for Rocky Young to score in the corner, the score closed to 17~14.
Sidmouth attacked our line but we managed to steal their ball, Matt Anstis kicked out from our try line only to be charged down. From the twenty two drop out we got down into their half.
From that long kick and with twenty three minutes gone we won a scum inside their twenty two and sent the ball wide towards the clubhouse for Jamie Shone to score in the corner. With the score we took the lead at 17~19.
With ten minutes to go we won a penalty on the hospital side half way in, Matt Anstis put it over to extend the lead to 17~22.
For the next five minutes the game went this way and that, the crowd getting more noisy.
Sidmouth attacked out of their own half but a loose back pass went begging and it was collected by Luke Stannard who shot off with it and looked odds on for a try when the referee blew and called him back to award a penalty to Sidmouth. From that they got to our line and won a lineout, caught and drove, six or seven times the forwards went for the line but were held out by good defence, eventually they gave up and sent it wide to cross on the hospital side. An easy conversion took the lead back at 24~22.
With a couple of minutes to go we attacked back and got into their twenty two to win a penalty that the home crowd thought should never have been.
With the game to win Matt Anstis with the kick and in a similar position to his previous penalty the ball struck the far post, the crown held their breath and to the joy of the home crowd it bounced out and Sidmouth had won, an inch the other way and we would have won.
Another close game between there two sides, we gained a loosing bonus point from it.
