I didn’t see the match as I was up in Exmouth watching the seconds so this report is gathered from here and there.
On the face of it having lost the last seven games, one of which was a Devon cup game, and with the students in top place in the league and we a lowly eleventh place a win seemed unlikely, a hope in only the most loyal of wives or girlfriends.
Exeter must have come down feeling they were going to cement their top place with a simple win, unfortunately they may have forgotten what happened last time they visited The Rectory they lost for the first time that season by 33~23.
This time they got off to the best of starts with a try inside five minutes but unfortunately for them they missed the conversion.
The home supporters must have thought ‘ Here we go again’ but them Matt Anstis added a penalty to make it 3~5.
Then Matt Gregory scored his third try of the season and may be one of the most vital, with it we took the lead at 8~5.
Matt Anstis added another penalty to make it 11~5.
The students scored a second try but again missed their conversion to take us to a slim but deserved 11~10 lead at half time.
According the team manager Kieran Leach we prevented them playing the game they wanted to and they had no plan ‘B’.
In the second half we defended as if our lives depended on it but Exeter were able to score a third try to retake the lead at 11~15.
With the clock ticking on we pressed and in a line out catch and drive Exeter collapsed it, referee Harvey Lavis decided we would probably have scored and awarded a penalty try giving Matt Anstis an easy conversion and with it an 18~15 lead.
Mean while up in Exmouth we got the news by text from Kieran ‘18~15 up 15 mins to go’, it was more than we could hope for.
The clock ticked on, “Any news” said Dave Oakley after about fifteen minutes, “It must be over now”
“Nothing yet”
There was no news after twenty minutes so we assumed that either Kieran was doing a lap of honour or had thrown his phone into the mud and jumped on it.
After half an hour Andy McBeath put us out of our misery, “He told me we had won ten minutes ago, didn’t he let you know”?
No he didn’t, thanks Kieran.
“I don’t know where this performance came from, we played out of our skins,” said Kieran to the press.
“I hope this is a corner turned for us, we did get our penalty count down and that was important as that has cost us in tight games before this season”
While everyone played well and contributed to the win Kieran did say that
Richard Baylis had an exceptional game in tackling and scrapping for the ball.
Just what we needed.
