There I was up in Barnstaple watching the seconds in their merit table game, meanwhile back at The Rectory the firsts were taking on Penryn, Penryn who have been glued to the bottom of the table all season.
If after Christmas I had looked at the remaining fixtures and put money on those I was sure we would win I would, amongst others, have put £20 on beating Penryn after all they are six places below us in the league.
So when Kieran’s first text came through saying we were 14~0 up inside twenty minutes or so I was able to put my phone back in my pocket with a quiet confidence and the thought that this was going to be a thirty or forty point win.
As I wasn't at the match I haven't got the flow of the game so I leave the texts in the photo at the top to tell the whole story each text with the time sent besides it.
So there we are I had lost my virtual £20.
It seems we took an early lead then sat on it, let them in to the game and then suddenly woken up and thought “B***** me we are going to loose this” and started to play as well but never quite well enough to catch Penryn who by now would have had their tails up at the thought of getting off the bottom of the table.
I do always take the view that players never arrive on the pitch thinking to themselves “I think I’ll play badly today.”
In the end we got two bonus points which is ok, but you have to say two points lost.
Our tries were scored by Andy Pond, Sam Bennett, Eddie McGinley and Alex Percival, Matt Anstis added two conversions.
We arrived back from Barnstaple to find the clubhouse rocking at the seams, you would be forgiven for thinking we had just gained promotion not lost to a team six places below us.
The Friday night boys were giving it their all and even some Penryn people had stayed behind to enjoy the evening. There was singing, dancing, loud merriment and the till was red hot.
When you stop to think about it, it was only a game.
We hung on to our eighth place unfortunately it put our friends over the water, Saltash, in to bottom place.
So we lost but everyone had a good evening, a good traditional rugby club evening and in the broader picture rugby won.
Next week we are away to Exeter Uni, shall I put £20 on to win? Might be worth a punt.
