Even the most enthusiastic supporter could not have viewed a trip to Exeter with much relish. Playing away to the second team in the table and considering the last two results the prospects were not rosy.
Sure enough by half time a text from Kieran told the tale, we were 22~0 down.
It was beginning to look as if we might sink by fifty points or so.
The next text seemed to confirm that out, 27~0 down, they had scored right after the restart.
However, for Exeter that was it, we started to play the half time talk had sparked life in to the team. Matt Anstis scored first then Sean Dunn, on as a replacement for super veteran Tony Sibley, scored a debut try and lastly a try from Luke Lomas, a Matt Anstis conversion took us to 19~27.
It was good to see Dunnerz play for the firsts, he has played for the seconds and occasionally the thirds for some years, always willing to travel away to the far reaches of the county fair weather or foul.
Sadly the game ended before we could score again and get a couple of bonus points.
Looking at the game, it says a great deal of the players when you can go into the second half twenty-seven points down and score three tries to their one.
We had won the second half but it is a shame we stood off in the first half and allowed them easy access to our try line.
At this point in the season and mid table it is easy to think there is nothing to go for, but with four games left two of three good wins would make the difference between being in the sunny uplands of the top quarter of the table or in the gloomy basement of the bottom quarter.
I know where they and the supporters would rather they were.
