Try Scorers

Albie Rickard 2

Another beautiful morning even midway through October when by now surely the rain and wind should of been lashing down on us at Horsham playing fields. Not only was the weather welcoming so to were the Plymstock Oaks Coaching staff, it had seemed like an age since the coaches had last shaken hands and shared a few stories before the match got underway.

Healthy numbers from both match day squads. Plymstock turning out with around 18 and Devonport brought 20 young men to the field of play this morning.

Warm ups complete the teams completed the coin toss and play commenced. An intense opening 10 minutes saw Devonport having to put in a huge defensive effort to keep a well coached Plymstock side from scoring. Several times Plymstock fell short at the final hurdle, on occasion due to the final pass not quite sticking or going cleanly to hand other times it was due to some superb last ditch try saving tackles from the away side.

With 5 mins to go until half time it finally clicked for Plymstock and passes started to go to hand, running in 3 Try's out wide once the Devonport defence had been gradually sucked in.

The half time whistle was much needed for the away side as Plymstock were beginning to run away with things.

A few coaching points at half time and ensuring the lads of Devonport didn't drop their heads the second half commenced. The game was still tight and extremely competitive, however this time Devonport were more punchy in attack and carried harder than they did in the first half. It was now Plymstock's turn to defend their lines. As the game progressed Devonport succeeded in crossing the line twice and were also unfortunately held up over the line twice.

Plymstock ended the game with a last second Try in a break away that was against the run of play for the second half.

Both sides played some excellent rugby on what was a glorious day for it.

What was even better than watching two groups of young men go hammer and tong at each other for 40 minutes, was watching them literally share a meal, a drink and what appeared to be a good laugh around the table top football in the club house afterwards. Many thanks to Plymstock Oaks for hosting us, we hope you enjoyed the morning as much as we did and we wish you the best of luck with the rest of your season. Look forward to having you at The Creek later in the season.

Bits to work on on the training paddock as ever, but we are continuing to build, didn't achieve the win this morning but played some good rugby and never crumbled under pressure.
