With us on top of the table and OPM in about eighth place, the prospect of a decent win was in the collective mind.
You have to give credit to OPM, who, for whatever reason, could only field a bare fifteen,
add to that they played down the slope in the first half and then had to play up after all their efforts in the first.
The first half was a slow start, considering the final score. OPM defended well, and their scrums were even, pushing us back a foot or so now and again, then we would do the same to them.
Our first try came on about ten minutes with Ethan Millard touching down and Matt Opie converting. They had a lineout, but Nathan Todd stole their ball, it ended with Ethan Millard, who ran at their line, he was stopped just short, but in one movement, he lifted and put down the ball down six inches further on for the score. 0~7.
OPM defended really well, and it was not for another ten minutes before we scored.
We had a couple of lineouts in their twenty-two and twice they stole the ball off us, but on the third, we did take it and the ball went to the backs ending with Toby Knowles who scored out wide, the touchline conversion by Matt Opie was wind-assisted and went over. 0~14.
From the restart, another attack by the backs got to James Thorp on the right wing, who, from their twenty-two, beat one defender to score. Matt Opie converted that one as well.
21~0.
On the half hour then on minute thirty-five Sam Fincham scored two tries, the first of his five in the game, There was a scrum mid field and we pushed the back seriously but the No 8 did well to get the ball away, they attacked but lost the ball, we ran back at then with Ethan Millard running deep in to their half, stopped the ball went right ending with Sam Fincham who ran in behind the posts. Matt Opie converted it.
OPM got to our line with a couple of penalties taking short lineouts, but made nothing of them. Eventually, we won a scum not far off our line, twice it was reset because the ball came out from the tunnel, on the third occasion, under a little pressure, we did get it away, and shortly afterwards the referee blew for half-time, the score stood at 0~35.
The second half started with us now playing down an obvious slope but against a reasonable breeze.
The scoring opened with a great long distance run by Ewan Piercy about five minutes into the half, under the crossbar he went to give Matt Opie a simple conversion. 0~42.
From the restart another try and the third for Sam Fincham after a decent run by Tom Richards, as TR closed in on the try line, the cry of “No, no” went up from the travelling supporters fearful he might score, as it was he was he was tackled short but was able to give it to Sam Fincham to make the score, with the Matt Opie conversion the score stood at 0~49.
From the restart we ran at them, it got to Nathan Todd on halfway after a couple of passes, he ran on, on the ten-yard line, he hesitated slightly, the supporters shouted at him to back himself, which he did, and after going in out wide ran in towards the post and did a shallow dive to score. The conversion, against the breeze was missed. 0~54.
James Thorp scored his second with Matt Neyle converting. 0~61.
With the score line rising quickly and OPM clearly getting weary but doing their best to keep going, Sam Fincham scored two more tries, and on both occasions our supporters shouted “Oh no” on each occasion. Matt Neyle converted both to make it 0~75.
Then Aiden Taylor scored from outside their twenty-two, as he closed in on the try line, Billy Sutton, in support, pretended to be going to tackle him, smiles from both as he went over the line. Matt Opie converted.
Again from the restart we scored, OPM attacked us, won a couple of penalties and tapped and went but really made little ground, then lost it, we took it then lost it then regained all in all rather confusing, Billy Sutton eventually got the ball and we ran at them, on about half way No 5 Alex Gibson got it and, in open space with no one defending their try line, ran for the score, on of their winger started the chase, you can see him getting closer and closer in the photos, I could sense him tiring as he got closer to the line, six feet from the line he was caught but his momentum just took him over with the very game defender hanging on to him. 0~87.
Toby Knowles scored his second and drop-kicked his own effort to make it 0~94.
I was rather hoping the referee would blow before it got to one hundred points; he didn’t, and the final score came from Cam Donkin, who shrugged off two defenders to score. No one was sure who converted it, maybe he dropped-kicked his own score.
So we ended at 0~101.
Again, great credit to OPM for sticking to it; their scrum did well, holding up for the whole game.
The win keeps us well on top of the table..
