This was the best game I have seen the 2s play this season and unfortunately Paignton IIs were on the receiving end.
They played as a team, as a young team with three or four wise heads, they were fast, lively and very quick to capitalise on any mistakes from Paignton.
The first ten minutes and it was all us with Paignton only making it into our half once, on that ten-minute mark a lineout followed by a catch and drive with Josh Hemmings coming up with the points. The conversion kick did not sound right but very nearly went over. 5~0.
Fourteen minutes on and the second try this time by James Hocking again from a lineout and a backs move, good to see Callum Perkins back playing and involved with this try.
The conversion was by Kyle Hookway. 12~0.
Paignton opened their scoring on twenty-three minutes from a lineout on the south side, a simple backs move, a missed tackle and Alex Allard went over under the crossbar. What should have been a cast-iron two points hit the left hand post and bounced dead. 12~5.
Twenty-six minutes gone and a try by prop Misa Cvetanovic, from a tap penalty Adrian Montague got to within a few feet of the line another run at the line was stopped but put to Misa Cvetanovic who went over near the stand side corner flag with the Paignton winger making a fruitless attempt to stop him. 17~5.
Thirty minutes and a yellow card to Paignton for what I think was a deliberate knock on.
Three minutes later Paignton, with a yellow card running added to their score with a backs attack down the middle then drifting right got very close to our line if not over it, the result was that referee Simon Davies, who clearly had seen something nefarious, blew and jogged off to the posts to signal a penalty try. 17~12.
From the restart Paignton made a mess of the catch and the ball fell lose, Josh Jarvis was the quickest to the ball, scooped it up and made a great run at the line and close to the posts only to be stopped short, the ball was quickly sent right for winger Leon Bray to score by the corner flag. 22~12 in thirty-six minutes.
That was it at halftime, we have had most of the ball and possession and been much more dynamic and lively, Paignton have been living off the scraps left behind by us but made good use of them and doing well to score with a yellow card running.
The scrums have just gone to us, pushing them back gently most of the time and they pushed us gently a couple of times. The lineouts have been even.
Our maul has been good.
The second half and we kicked off to them and against the breeze, it ended with their No10 who kicked long, it looked like a great kick that would have given them a five yard lineout, unfortunately for him the ball bounced unkindly and bobbled on and over the dead ball line.
Scrum back to us well inside their twenty-two and midfield. The ball came out and went left first then back right and lastly to Leon Bray who dived in at the corner flag for his second of the afternoon. 27~12.
At this point it looked like we were pulling away decisively.
On nine minutes a simple midfield penalty to Paignton. 27~15.
The next ten minutes or so the game wandered to and fro again with us having most of the action, Then a lovely run down the left wing by Josh Jarvis who just beat a defender to the line, ran in a few paces in and went to ground to score. 32~15.
Paignton had four or five scrums/lineouts inside our twenty-two but we managed to disrupt all of them one way or another.
On twenty-one minutes, they had a scrum in our half, won the ball attacked a couple of times but lost the ball forward, we were quickly on it and with two passes it reached Joe McKinley who took the ball near halfway, sprinted down the left wing, one hand off deep into their twenty-two and beating the full back went closer to the post slightly and touched down. 37~15.
The last score on twenty-six minutes or so after a scrum to Paignton well aside our twenty-two was won, they attacked twice but lost the ball, we fly hacked it clear, then there was a chase by players of both side, I think we fly hacked again, from the far end of the pitch it was difficult to see, I thought they had got possession quite close to their line but evidently not because scrum half Jayson Wilson ended the move with a try. He attempted the conversion but it hit the crossbar. 42~15.
The next ten minutes produced nothing for either side and the game’s end was blown by referee Simon Davies, thanks to Simon for the refereeing.
So ended a very lively game, from our point of view, plenty of young players who clearly enjoyed themselves from start to finish and played with smiles on their faces.
Good to see. It bumps us up to 6th in the Devon merit table 1.
