This was to have been played away but was switched to Keyham I presume because of wet pitches at Exmouth.
In the first game in November they handed us a walkover for whatever reason.
Over the years we have taken a battering from Exmouth II sometimes going down by over 100 points and on one such occasion we had to persuade the coach driver to put on a pair of boots and run out for us.
Last season we caught up with them and it became a more even contest each side winning a game.
The point is that despite the last two games when we scored a total of 174 points this was definitely not going to be the same.
We lie second in the table and they are in seventh and in a tight league like this that is no guide to the possible result.
It was played at Keyham on a horrible afternoon where it rained /drizzled almost all the time except when the referee blew for full time when the clouds cleared and the sun came out.
For a very keenly contested match, there is not much to write about partly because I was reluctant to take out my voice recorder in the rain.
From the off we scored really quickly down the right wing, from a lineout on the left wing deep in their twenty-two the ball quickly went down the line for Matt Richards to run in without the defence getting to him and score about halfway in. Mike Howell converted and we were a promising 7~0 up inside five minutes.
For most of the rest of the half the two teams sparred with the game evenly going up and down the pitch, we passed up a couple of simple penalty kick chances until the half hour when the forwards had a catch and drive on the left wing with Josh Martin the try scorer. The conversion was missed. 12~0.
Then just before the break Exmouth got on the scoreboard when Jack Down touched the ball down, the conversion attempt was missed. 12~5.
That was it at half time lots of action not much to write about.
The scrums were sort of even, they may have been slightly on top. Neither side were perfect in the lineout, the wet hardly helping, but of the two we were better stealing quite a bit of their ball. They were a little stronger in the mauls.
Both sides defended well.
The second half kicked off with us kicking to them. Surprisingly we were able to keep them in their half for the first thirty minutes or so, we had so much possession and they defended so well we were not able to add to the score. We also defended well and were very quickly on them preventing them from getting any moves going.
We got to their line and over it three times but for one reason or another did not score.
On one occasion Ethan Millard, I think, went in low and the photographs clearly showed that he had scored. Unfortunately the referee was unsighted and did not give it.
Then at last we scored on the half hour when Matt Richards dodged the last defender to score on the left. The conversion was missed. 17~5.
With the referee calling fourteen minutes to go we were looking reasonably safe considering Exmouth had been unable to threaten our half never mind our line, and we were on top in the scrums and on one occasion stealing their put in.
But then they did get into our half and put a little pressure on us. I forget the build-up but they were halfway across our twenty-two with maybe ten minutes to go when Charlie Parr
broke clear and went for the line, he was half tackled once about ten feet out but was able to scramble on un-held, half tackled again he was able to reach for the line to score near the posts a simple conversion for Charlie Tate and the score stood at 17~12.
Spurred on by this they attacked again and won a lineout about ten yards out.
With only five points needed for a draw, we were under serious pressure and could very easily lose the game.
Once again really good lineout work by Kyle Felton and his lifters stole their throw and Mike Howell kicked away to their half, and for the next few minutes we played down the clock or prevented them from doing anything worthwhile with the ball.
Then with time up, we kicked the ball out for the win.
All in all a tighter game than we expected, we probably should have scored another twelve points but due to their excellent defence we didn’t score them, and I don’t think Exmouth had any scoring chances missed.
They did pick up a bonus point for their efforts.
