Services came out on top against Crediton in a match played in mud with a sprinkling of grass. Captain Megan Musgrave won the toss and elected to play downhill with the wind in the first half. It was hard to see any grass, the only thing visible was mud which made running rugby very difficult. Services pinned Crediton in their won 22 for the first five minutes there were strong carries from Kaya Bos and Yahnah Moyle and eventually they gave away a penalty which Jess Cooper successfully kicked .3-0.
From the kick off Services put Crediton on the back foot again forcing them to give away another penalty. Jess Cooper took the penalty but missed with her kick and Crediton played the ball out to the edge of their '22'. Someone from Services turned the ball over (difficult to see who in all the mud) and passed to Megan Heath who brushed off a couple of tackles to score the first Try.Jess Cooper converted 10-0.
The match was stopped for five minutes due to an injury to Crediton player and when play resumed Services scored their second try. Crediton had a lineout on their 10m line, took it cleanly, scrum half passed to 10 who threw a wild pass and Jess Cooper intercepted and made her way to the try line and then proceeded to stumble but fortunately managed to regain her composure to score and then got back up to convert 17-0.
Services were dominant in the first half and could have had a couple more tries but the conditions didn't help and a couple of costly penalties in good field positions were frustrating.
Half time 17-0 to Services.
The expected onslaught from Crediton came early on but great tackling meant no way through. They did eventually score to make it 17-5 but then it was the try of the match. Crediton attacked and lost the ball outside our 22 and Jess Cooper picked up the loose ball and made a break down the blind side got tackled but they infringed giving away a penalty. Jess took the penalty quick the ball was carried strongly by Jemima Cameron and Kaya and eventually Livi Squire received the ball on the right wing but was tackled by two players but managed to stay strong, waited for some support Passed inside to Katherine Wherry she went forward offloaded to Kaya Bos who made more metres attracting defenders, quick ball from Mo and Jess Cooper was on hand to pass to Lizzie Langton who wrong footed one defender, got tackled by two more but managed to offload the ball to Jess Cooper who scored again under the posts and converted. 24-5.
Crediton managed one more try but could not find any way through an awesome defence. Every big runner they sent down the inside channel were hit back. Everyone tackled like never before, the scrum was on top all game Yahnah Moyle,Katherine Wherry,Kaya Bos, Tegan Tunnicliffe, Chloe Leach,Jess Griffiths made the platform so number 8 Megan Heath had time to pick and go attracting defenders. This in turn gave Morwenna Dunston at 9 plenty of time to give the ball to Faye Robinson to get the backs moving. Livi Squire and Lauren Grange did not see much of the ball due to the conditions but had to keep their concentration levels high all game.
Playing up hill in the second half was always going to be a challenge to the Girls but it was one they relished, the way they repelled almost all the oppositions attacks was top quality and shows working on Defence in training is important.
